Summary: NMSU Grants was established as a branch of New Mexico State University in 1968 through the cooperative efforts of New Mexico State University and Grants Municipal Schools. As a two-year branch community college, NMSU Grants serves the local communities in Cibola and McKinley counties, including the Pueblos of Acoma, Laguna, and Zuni, as well as Tohajiilee, San Mateo, San Rafael, Cubero, the City of Grants, and the Village of Milan.
Classification Summary:
The Assistant Professor of English & Communications will teach a variety of courses in English composition, technical writing, literature, and/or communications in various instructional modalities, including in-person, hybrid, and online formats. The successful candidate will contribute to curriculum development, assessment of student learning, student advising, and departmental initiatives while engaging in professional development and college service activities. Required to teach 15 credits per semester.

Master’s degree in English/Composition/Rhetoric or Master’s degree in a related discipline with required 18 graduate credit hours in English/Composition/Rhetoric from a regionally accredited institution.
Three years teaching experience.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
• Teach courses in developmental writing, rhetoric & composition, literature, and/or communications in various instructional modalities such as in-person, hybrid, or online formats.
• Facilitate student learning by developing appropriate instructional strategies to fit students' needs and support student engagement. Continually assess and revise curriculum to improve student learning.
• Support program functions such as textbook selection, curriculum development, and other program needs requiring faculty input.
• Teach and support the development of specialty courses (non-credit based options, dual credit classes, or accelerated courses)
• Provide regular and predictable access for students through posted office hours, electronic communication, and other appropriate methods.
• Instruct, assist, and motivate students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies and informed feedback on assignments and discussions.
• Support program improvement through regular professional development, curriculum development, program review, and collaborative assessment of student learning.
• Advise and assist students in planning an educational pathway and selecting courses, and when necessary refer students to appropriate student services for assistance.
• Work effectively with colleagues and students to be a positive contributing member of the campus community.
• Represent and promote the English & Communications Program at system-wide and state meetings as well as in the community.
• Work effectively within the college, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills. Actively participate in college governance and committees, contributing to committee work and college service activities as per NMSU Administrative Rules and Procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Campus Executive & Academic Officer
Preferred Qualifications
• Ability to teach Rhetoric & Composition/Literature AND another content area like Communications or Linguistics.
• Experience teaching at the community college level.
• Experience teaching online using CANVAS learning management systems or similar LMS.
• Experience working with students from diverse populations, including academic, age, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.
