Classification Summary:
Partners with leadership to direct the daily operations of academic advising services across departments. This role supports student success by overseeing advising programs, guiding staff, and working with campus partners to help students stay on track and graduate on time. The Associate Director assists in planning, improving advising strategies, and ensuring consistent, high-quality support for students. Manage day-to-day operations of a staff team.
Classification Standard Duties:
Provides leadership for the development and enhancement of student success structures, policies, and practices to support students. Works with leadership to establish student learning outcomes and programmatic goals. Works with leadership to develop, implement, coordinate, and assess support programs designed to improve persistence, retention and graduation rates. Partners on the development of policies and procedures to enhance the effectiveness of student support services, and supports initiatives aimed at improving student persistence, retention, and graduation rates. Design and deliver training and professional development for unit staff as well as stakeholders across the university system. Represent the respective student success function in promoting relationships with academic partners across the university and across the system. Recommend policies, processes and procedures that facilitate student persistence, retention and graduation. Provide feedback to academic programs regarding the identification of academic milestones, curricular barriers, course needs, and the student learning experience. Serve on advisory boards and university-appointed committees and task forces as needed.

KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of academic advising approaches and best practices. Knowledge of theories of student development, student learning, career development, and other related theories. Knowledge of national trends and strategies focused on student persistence, retention and graduation. Understanding of the University's mission, vision and goals. Knowledge and understanding of the institution's academic policies and procedures. Comprehensive knowledge of the institution's programs, academic requirements, majors, minors, and other academic offerings. Knowledge of and experience with strategies that contribute to achievement of student learning outcomes. Knowledge of organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.; SKILLS: Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead, manage, and develop the Global Academic Advising team, including Academic Advisors and Lead Academic Advisors, to ensure a high-touch, high-engagement student support model focused on serving the needs of online adult learners.
- Develop and implement strategic initiatives, campaigns, outreach efforts, and programming to improve student persistence and minimize attrition, targeting specific student demographics, risk levels, and engagement trends.
- Collaborate extensively with Graduation Teams (Admissions, Academic Advising, Student Success Mentoring, Career Services, and Financial Aid) to ensure a holistic approach to student support and degree completion.
- Serve as the primary liaison between the Global Academic Advising team and academic departments, ensuring advisors have accurate, up-to-date information on curricula, course prerequisites, degree pathways, and registration procedures.
- May maintain student advising caseload and ensure backups always exist for advisors and processes exist for student escalations.
- Forecast course demand for upcoming semesters, working closely with university partners to align academic offerings with student needs.
- Managing degree audit substitutions for general education and viewing a wider world courses.
- Manage relationships with academic departments to make approval recommendations for course transcript evaluations and course equivalencies.
- Develop and ensure staff compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs), service level agreements (SLAs), and job aids to ensure consistency in advising practices and service quality.
- Utilize data analytics and student performance metrics within Navigate, Canvas, and other platforms to track student success, assess program effectiveness, and drive data-informed decision-making.
- Oversee student engagement initiatives including but not limited to registration campaigns, student success seminars, graduation celebrations, and retention-focused events.
- Foster a collaborative, goal-oriented team culture with an emphasis on accountability, professional development, and cultivating next level leadership growth.
- Monitor and evaluate advising program effectiveness, implementing continuous improvements based on data-driven insights.
