Summary:  Seeking a livestock microbiologist with experience and training for research regarding the microbiome for a full-time, tenure-track position at Assistant or Associate Professor rank.

Classification Summary:

Animal & Range Sciences focuses on animal production, management and marketing.

Classification Standard Duties:
Courses focus on varied aspects of the animal science industry. The faculty are dedicated to high quality instruction and scientific endeavors that provide real-world solutions for the industry.

Required Education, Experience, Certification/License, Equivalency
A Ph.D. in animal science or related field or a DVM is required by the date of hire; strong potential for, or established record of effectiveness in, teaching, research, and public service; and interest in developing projects of relevance to agricultural stakeholders

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Excellent communication skills appropriate for technical and non-technical audiences; demonstrated track record of collaborative research, including seeking and acquiring external funding and publishing in peer-reviewed journals; experience managing student research projects and training students in research; demonstrated interest in, and experience with, innovative teaching modalities.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
The Department of Animal and Range Sciences seeks a livestock microbiologist with experience and training for research regarding the microbiome for a full-time, tenure-track position at Assistant or Associate Professor rank. As a 9-month faculty member to be located on the main campus in Las Cruces. The appointment will be research (75%) and teaching (25%). Classroom teaching is required, but may also include remote teaching responsibilities in the Department of Animal and Range Sciences. The successful applicant will develop an innovative research program including but not limited to beef cattle as related and affected by gut health and the animal microbiome oriented toward improving animal health, performance, food-safety, and minimizing the environmental impact of New Mexico’s animal industries. Teaching will be at the under graduate and graduate levels, focused on providing a rich learning experience to students.
Opportunities exist for faculty to participate in special agency initiatives for faculty research at Hispanic-serving, minority-serving, and IDEA state institutions such as NIH SCORE, the NIH U54 Partnership for the Advancement of Cancer Research, and NIH INBRE, as well as agency-sponsored student training programs for underrepresented minority students (NIH RISE; NIH MARC; NIH BP-ENDURE; NSF; USDA). The university maintains facilities for animal care, microscopy, isotope chemistry, tissue culture, BSL-2 research, molecular biology, mass spectrometry, greenhouses, and natural history collections.
The successful applicant will demonstrate the expertise to assist the Animal and Range Sciences Department with faculty responsibilities relating to the land-grant mission of the University. Evidence of the applicant’s success to establish an independent research program, disseminate research through publications and presentations, secure independent funding, and participate in national, university, college, and departmental service and governance activities is essential. The successful candidate will be able to guide undergraduate and graduate student research projects, advise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and provide support for student retention and degree completion. Collaborative involvement with researchers in the Department of Animal and Range Sciences and other off-campus agricultural experiment stations is expected.

This position also supports the mission and goals of the Center of Excellence in Sustainable Food and Agricultural Systems (CESFAS). The successful candidate will be expected to effectively build and participate in transdisciplinary and multi-departmental teams designed to address critical issues related to sustaining food and agricultural systems, and to develop collaborative relationships with faculty in the center, and across the college.
Promote programs within the department, College of ACES and NMSU to meet the LEADS 2025 Equity, Inclusion and Diversity goals prioritizing the program expansion to non-traditional demographics.

Preferred Qualifications

Postdoctoral experience in a related field is highly desired. Excellent communication skills
