Classification Summary:
The faculty in this position will teach in the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and post graduate APRN certificate programs, which are delivered through distance education to nurses throughout the state of New Mexico and nation. Certification, experience, and expertise as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is required. Certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) (i.e., FNP-PMHNP dual certification) is a strong preference for this teaching position. The goal of this faculty position is to increase the number of primary care nurse practitioners (NPs) trained and prepared to provide primary care services, mental health, and substance use disorder (SUD) care. This is a non-tenure track, full time, 9-month position with an option to teach in the summer semester.

New Mexico State University (NMSU) offers the DNP degree and certificate program in the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) and family nurse practitioner (FNP) specialty tracks. The DNP program embeds coursework in population health strategies to improve physical and mental health outcomes. Competencies in opioid and other substance use disorders are threaded throughout the PMHNP and FNP curricula. The School of Nursing is currently developing a dual-track DNP degree program, enabling students to fulfill the criteria for both the FNP and PMHNP specialties.

Didactic courses are delivered in an online format and students complete their clinical training experiences under the direct supervision of preceptors and indirect supervision by NMSU nurse practitioner faculty. Teaching responsibilities may include didactic DNP core courses, PMHNP and/or FNP specialty courses, and PMHNP and/or FNP clinical courses.

In addition to teaching, School of Nursing faculty develop and revise the curriculum, serve on department, college or university committees, and mentor students on their DNP projects. Faculty may also have the opportunity to participate in nursing scholarship including practice or education-focused research or quality improvement projects.

Applicants should be able to communicate effectively with students, staff and other faculty members, and use computer and classroom technologies. Competency in nursing education and pedagogy, and knowledge of current nurse practitioner education issues and trends is an asset.

Candidates would be joining a team of passionate nursing faculty and staff who are dedicated to student success and graduating nurses, nurse leaders, nurse practitioners and nurse anesthetists to serve the state of New Mexico and surrounding border region.
