We are looking for two (2) Nutrition Educator in McKinley County, NM to work with ICAN. Ideas for Cooking and Nutrition (ICAN) is a New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Service (NMSU CES) program funded by Federal Grants to provide nutrition education to SNAP-eligible audience in New Mexico.

Classification Summary:
Provide nutrition education to ICAN eligible participants.

Classification Standard Duties:
Plan, prepare, shop for and travel to ICAN classes. Teach multiple series of classes to recruited groups of adults and youth, using approved nutrition curricula. Recruit and organize groups of individuals with limited income and from minority populations. Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with individuals and agencies that can assist in reaching the ICAN target audience. Collect and document required ICAN program information, including the administration of outcome evaluation. Training for ICAN nutrition educator.

Required Education, Experience, Certification/License, Equivalency
Required Education:High School diploma or GED.; Required Experience:Two (2) years of related experience.; Equivalency:Completion of a post-secondary degree or certificate may substitute for years of experience.; Required Certification/License:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
KNOWLEDGE:Knowledge of limited income families and minority populations. Knowledge of community resources. Knowledge of nutrition facts, recruiting techniques, teaching techniques, and food preparation techniques.; SKILLS:Proficient with computer skills such as internet, email, word processing, data entry, and data file organization. Listening skills, writing skills, verbal communication.; ABILITIES:Ability to establish and maintain a congenial working relationship with Cooperative Extension professionals, program assistants, other educators and the public. Ability to follow oral and written instructions, follow all program policies and procedures, keep records and complete reports, organize and use time efficiently, work in a self contained situation. Ability to interact patiently and effectively with children and adults on one-on-one and in group settings.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
Recruit participants from target audience. Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with agencies, groups and individuals in order to accomplish educational goals. Plan, prepare, shop for and travel to ICAN classes. Teach multiple classes and series of classes to groups of adults and youth using approved nutrition curricula. Collect, document and submit required data, including outcome evaluation and impact statements in a timely fashion.
Works alone and with other Nutrition Educators/Extension Staff to plan and coordinate nutrition education lessons. Networks with local food assistance and social service agencies to recruit participants and arrange classes. Teaches ICAN-specific topics from approved curriculum to groups of adults and youth.

Preferred Qualifications

Some food service experience preferred.
Ability to demonstrate cooking techniques preferred.
Ability to read, write and speak Spanish-Language preferred.

Special Requirements of the Position
Food handler’s certification will be required, post hire.
National Nutrition Educator’s Certification (FoodSense), will be required, post hire.
Civil Right Training will be required, post hire.
Work is performed in remote locations throughout county.
A home office may be necessary.
Some work is performed in outdoor settings.
Must possess and maintain a vehicle in order to perform job duties. Mileage is reimbursed according to NMSU policy.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Environment: Work is normally performed indoors.

Physical Effort: Moderate physical activity.

Lifting Requirements: Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

Risk: Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
