Summary: The department of Extension Plant Sciences (EPS) invites you to apply for the position of Research Scientist, Assc. EPS strives to bring strong Extension programs to the largest agricultural commodity areas in the state.
Classification Summary:
Independently employs a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures in a particular field of specialization to plan, design, and conduct research and present findings. Carries out novel or complex assignments requiring the development of new or improved techniques and procedures. May act in a liaison capacity with various department, divisions, and organizations.
Classification Standard Duties:
Designs and implements research protocols and projects; applies advanced analytical techniques and the modification and extension of theories and practices in innovative research projects in field of specialty; develops statistical and observational models. Operates and maintains sophisticated equipment to conduct research, analyze data, and report research findings; may instruct others in use of equipment. Applies diversified knowledge of scientific research principles, practices, and protocols in research projects; may make recommendations and conclusions which serve as the basis for decision making in a specialty area. Collaborates with users and principal investigators on design, analysis, application, and reporting of research projects; teaches and advises on techniques. Supplies technical leadership and consultation to professional co-workers, collaborators, and graduate students. Prepares analyses, reports, and other documentation for publication; presents findings at local, national, and/or international meetings. Prepares grant proposals to obtain funding in support of research activities. Serves as principal investigator, as appropriate, on sub-projects of complexities consistent with above criteria. May manage or oversee a research laboratory; may curate a research collection. Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems.Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Comprehensive knowledge of engineering, scientific, and/or mathematical concepts and theories in area of specialty. knowledge of contracts and grants preparation and management. Knowledge of engineering and/or scientific research principles, practices, and protocols. Job Duties and Responsibilities
The position will provide educational opportunities to the stakeholders and Extension agents through research and Extension to address New Mexico wine industry needs. Organizing and conducting wine quality workshops and seminars; visiting winery and vineyard sites to work one-on-one with individual producers; working with grape growers to monitor sugar and acid levels to identify the ideal time to harvest for the best flavor conditions; providing advice during the harvesting process to maintain the integrity of the grapes; utilizing the new equipment at NMSU Food Science Lab to support individual winemakers; making recommendations for performing specific analysis, during all phases of wine production, to identify and resolve production issues, and to improve quality; assisting the winemakers to understand the results of these analyses to assist in making decisions on how to treat the wine or juice to make improvements; coordinating Enology Vendor and winemaking suppliers presentations or workshops to promote new and emerging products and techniques; consulting on bottling process to ensure proper hygiene practices, safety, and quality standards; developing and distributing Extension materials that address the relevant needs of New Mexico’s grape and wine industries; preparing and publishing newsletters and Extension publications or videos that begin a library of reference materials for emerging and existing winemakers. Conduct research on enology and related fields to address issues and needs of New Mexico’s grape and wine industries. Travel to visit New Mexico wineries statewide and to present findings at industry conferences and agricultural meetings, both within the State, and Nationally.
Preferred Qualifications
BS in Enology, Viticulture, Pomology, Plant Science, Plant Biology, Horticulture, Food Science and Technology or related field, and 5 years of production/enology experience in related field. Basic knowledge and understanding in enology or viticulture; knowledge in Extension work and, in the design, and establishment of demonstration plots; knowledge or ability to work with vineyards and with full and part-time farmers and/or hobby growers.
