Classification Summary:
Under general supervision, responsible for protecting organization premises and property. On a routine basis, inspects grounds to ensure security requirements are met. May be required to enforce parking regulations and report fire and safety hazards. Reports atypical situations to management. May use electronic surveillance equipment. Requires the ability to react quickly in sensitive situations. Frequently reports to a security supervisor or a security manager.

Classification Standard Duties:
Escort individuals to/from campus locations when no indication of potential violence. Identify and report unsafe conditions, to include fires, facility damage, inoperable safety equipment, etc. Activate alarm(s) as necessary. Prepare and submit standardized reports. Patrol through designated areas (inside and/or outside; on foot or with a vehicle). Check/verify buildings are secure. Observe and report suspicious behavior. Assist in facility evacuations. Monitor or review video camera footage (no administrative rights). Request assistance from police and/or higher level security personnel. Provide information to individuals (e.g., directions, general campus information, etc.). Safely operate motor vehicles, to include providing rides to students, employees, or visitors. Lock doors and arm alarm systems as needed. Perform miscellaneous security-related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
KNOWLEDGE:Knowledge of federal, state, and local traffic laws and regulations governing the operation of a commercial passenger vehicle.Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, laws, regulations and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions. Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar. Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules.; SKILLS:Skill in providing protection services to individuals on campus; Skill in utilizing security equipment and systems. Skilled in communicating effectively to include giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times. Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents. Being aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do. Talking to others to convey information effectively. Communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.; ABILITIES:Ability to resolve customer complaints and concerns; Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports; Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures; Ability to drive motor vehicles; Ability to detect problems and report information to appropriate personnel; Ability to understand and follow safety procedures. The ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand. Using sound judgment and decision making to include logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems. Adjusting actions in relation to others' actions. Ability to identify problems and act appropriately to include knowing when to intervene and when to call for help. The ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions (includes finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events). The ability to see near and far as well as hear in a crowded or noisy environment. The ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense. Ability to safely operate a variety of motor vehicles under normal and high congestion traffic. Ability to use issued equipment including radios, computers, force options, and traffic control equipment. Ability to lift 50 pounds using proper lifting techniques. Ability to stand for long periods of time in all types of weather. Ability to work varying hours both day and night.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
A security officer plays a crucial role in maintaining safety and order. Their responsibilities typically include:
Patrolling and Monitoring: Regularly inspecting premises to deter criminal activity and ensure a secure environment.
Access Control: Managing the entrance and exit of employees, visitors, and vehicles according to security protocols.
Surveillance: Monitoring to detect any suspicious activities.
Communication: Using radios or other devices to coordinate security efforts.
Compliance and Reporting: Documenting daily activities and security incidents for management review.

Preferred Qualifications

A security officer needs to stay composed and fearless in different situations, including working in low-light conditions, encountering insects, or dealing with animals. Confidence and awareness are key to ensuring safety while remaining undisturbed by external factors.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Environment: Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.

Physical Effort: Light physical effort. Effort applies to no more than two (2) hours per day.

Lifting Requirements: Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds.

Risk: Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
