Summary:  The NMSU Police Department strives to provide an environment free of crime to enhance the educational process at the university. The members of the Department are committed to the protection of the lives, rights, and property of all citizens; the vigorous apprehension of criminals; the creation of new and innovative programs; and effective dialogue with the members of the public. We endeavor to be an active and constructive part of the community they serve.

Classification Summary:
Provide high level of safety and security services while under the authority of the NMSU Police Department. Responsible for monitoring for and identification of illegal and/or dangerous situations. Provide crowd management, access and traffic control, alcohol server support, emergency response, complete investigations and reports for traffic crashes and minor incidents, report any suspicious or criminal behavior, and may enforce University parking regulations. Work under general supervision of an NMSU Police Supervisor. Provide guidance and leadership to Security Officers.

Classification Standard Duties:
Responsible for proactive foot and bicycle patrol and visible uniform presence in assigned areas. Assists staff in walk-throughs of areas of concern when requested, take reports in assigned areas as required and will request a police officer by radio as needed. PSAs should only leave their assigned areas to assist with major incidents. Works under direct and indirect supervision; may work shifts; may work special events; files reports on incidents; conducts preliminary investigations; directs and routes traffic; gives information to visitors: uses equipment related to law enforcement function; may perform pre-entry screening of employees, visitors, and other persons to guard against theft and maintain security of premises; assists in processing crime scenes and evidence; responds to non-violent emergencies; assists with prisoner handling, transport, and security; provides emergency assistance as necessary; responds to fire alarms; assists with crowd control. Testifies at appeal hearings. Issues parking citations, installs vehicle boots for parking violations.

Required Education, Experience, Certification/License, Equivalency
Required Education:High School diploma or GED, must complete Security Officer I & II training requirements within 6 months of hire.; Required Experience:Preferred previous Level II Security Officer with the NMSU Police Department or previous law enforcement certification with favorable separation.; Equivalency:None; Required Certification/License:Must pass a criminal history, background, and fingerprint check. A valid New Mexico driver’s license will be required. May also be required to complete psychological and drug screen exams. Must be at least 18 years old.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, laws, regulations and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions. Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar. Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules. Skilled in communicating effectively to include giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times. Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents. Being aware of others’ reactions and understanding why they react as they do. Talking to others to convey information effectively. Communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand. The ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand. Using sound judgment and decision making to include logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems. Adjusting actions in relation to others’ actions. Ability to identify problems and act appropriately to include knowing when to intervene and when to call for help. The ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions (includes finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events). The ability to see near and far as well as hear in a crowded or noisy environment. The ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense. Ability to safely operate a variety of motor vehicles under normal and high congestion traffic. Job Duties and Responsibilities
Duties of a Public Safety Aide can include assignment to patrol of housing areas, libraries, general patrol of other campus areas, parking enforcement, special events as needed, and other areas of the department as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

This position provides an opportunity for a flexible work schedule for potential candidates' dependent upon the needs of the department. It also allows candidates to gain practical experience in security/law enforcement.

Special Requirements of the Position
This is a Part-Time Temp Position.
This is a temporary appointment with a predetermined end date not to exceed 1 year and is subject to an earlier termination if necessary. Temporary employees have no entitlement or expectation of continued employment during or beyond the appointment period.

Risk: Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
