Classification Summary:
Provides professional counseling to students on academic, financial, and personal matters. Provides individual and group therapy and counseling. Responsible for program development and evaluation, and outreach activities. Consults with academic departments and student affairs organizations.

Classification Standard Duties:
Provide individual counseling to students in personal and interpersonal adjustment, academic concerns, and career and life planning. Provides referrals to outside resources. Consults with faculty, staff and others as appropriate to provide an optimum environment for student success. Serves as liaison when providing direct auxiliary aides and performs related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
KNOWLEDGE:University and department policies and procedures; principles and practices of organization and administration; counseling theory and techniques, career and academic counseling; crisis intervention and community resources; professional ethics; psychopathology; psychological assessment and consultation; referral resources; and human growth and development.; SKILLS:Problem identification, analysis, and resolution; facilitation of referrals; public contact and relations; short-and long-range planning.; ABILITIES:Travel periodically for training and consultation; communicate effectively in written and oral form; develop and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty and staff; report preparation, recognition of when to consult with other professionals; maintain accurate and orderly records; use independent judgment and initiative; organize and direct activities; analyze and evaluate information; direct, evaluate, train and supervise the work of assigned personnel; safeguard confidential and privileged information.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
The Mental Health Counselor provides professional counseling services to Doña Ana Community College students in areas of academic, career, and personal concerns. This position supports student success by offering individual and group therapy, crisis intervention, program development, and outreach activities. The Counselor will also serve as a campus resource by consulting with faculty, staff, and academic departments to foster a supportive environment for student well-being and learning.

Provide individual counseling to students addressing personal, interpersonal, academic, career, and life planning concerns.

Provide group therapy and counseling sessions to support student development and mental wellness.

Deliver crisis management services, including assessment, intervention, and referral.

Assist students in developing coping skills and managing challenges such as depression, anxiety, and stress.

Provide diagnostic services for students with disabilities to support accommodations through Student Accessibility Services.

Serve as a liaison for direct auxiliary aids and coordinate referrals to external mental health resources as needed.

Develop and implement workshops, trainings, and presentations for the DACC community on topics such as mental health awareness, coping strategies, and best practices for managing anxiety.

Collaborate with campus partners, including faculty, staff, Student Affairs, and academic departments, to promote holistic student success.

Provide consultation and support to faculty and staff regarding student mental health concerns.

Serve as advisor for the Active Minds student club and collaborate with TimelyCare as appropriate.

Participate in the development, evaluation, and continuous improvement of counseling programs and outreach initiatives.

Maintain accurate, confidential records in accordance with legal, ethical, and institutional standards.

Travel periodically for professional development, training, and consultation.

Preferred Qualifications

Independent licensure in New Mexico as a LPCC or LCSW.

Experience providing counseling in a higher education or academic setting.

Experience advising student organizations and leading outreach activities.

Special Requirements of the Position
Licensed in the State of New Mexico as one of the following by the date of employment:

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC)

Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)

Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW)

Demonstrated experience providing therapy and crisis intervention services.
