Advertising Summary: A Professor of Practice is a non-tenure track faculty member who is selected for their professional expertise and experience in a particular field. In this role, you will be serving as a Capstone Advisor for the College of Engineering's Capstone Design Program at NMSU. The program was established in the fall of 2018 to provide students with a capstone experience that closely mimics real-life scenarios. This is achieved by exposing students to interdisciplinary projects defined by industry professionals, and overseen by mentors with a background in project management. Teams of seniors work together in the fall and spring semesters of their final year to create, build and test their innovative projects.
As a Capstone Advisor, you will play a crucial role in guiding and supporting students through the completion of their capstone projects.

Job Duties and Responsibilities: As Capstone Advisor you are an essential figure in the educational journey of students by contributing significantly to students' academic and professional growth and the overall success of the capstone program. This position is responsible for providing student mentorship, project oversight, evaluation and assessment of projects, resource coordination, communication and support, as well as evaluating and documenting student progress. You will assist the capstone course instructor with all aspects of the Capstone Design Program from working with industry to define projects to final presentation of projects during the Design Day event.

 

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience: 
• A master's or doctoral degree in a relevant field. (Industry experience may be used in lieu of advanced degree
• Demonstrated expertise in the subject matter or discipline related to the capstone projects.
• Strong communication and mentoring skills.
• Experience in academic advising, research supervision, or project management is preferred.
• Familiarity with academic standards and assessment methods.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Environment: Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.

Physical Effort: Light physical effort. Effort applies to no more than two (2) hours per day.

Lifting Requirements: Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 10 pounds or some standing or walking.

Risk: No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
